So Im getting bored with my e30 these days so Iv decided to get tune it for the track but keep it road legal. No silly things like a completely striped out interior or a power steering delete. I still want to drive it a few days per week.
Here’s the specs so far…
– 316i 1990 poverty spec
– 325i running gear
– 325i brakes
– m52b28 @227bhp
– rebuilt 3.15 LSD with 40% lock
– Jom budget suspension
– Lenso 7.5″ and 9″ rims with Falcon 205 / Toyo 225 tyres
– m50 small radiator
Recent changes have been;
– Mazda 4 pot brakes up front.
I bought the parts myself and had the brackets made up. I made adapters to convert the BMW bubble flare to the Mazdas double flare.
Iv wasted hours searching for adapters online but they cant be found. My advice if your doing this, get this guy to do send you everything to do this upgrade. I saved about 100 euro buy DIYing it but it was a headache. Cost me about €320 but this guy sells the complete kit for around €420.
– Rear Strut brace
I bought this from FK.de (http://www.fk-shop.de/en/Suspension-…4-Bora-1J.html)
Its for a bora but its fairly universal. Iv just used a couple of brackets for now but Il get it welded in at some point. Cant go wrong for €20!
– Wider front track
This will improve front end cornering. That was the worst characteristic when it was on the track. The e30 M3 has this as an upgrade from the standard e30 so if they did it, well, ill do it to. I have 35mm spacers and i plan on getting some 0ET offset rims like XXR. Iv made 1 fibreglass wing with an arch extension of about 35mm. The other is on its way. Its my first attempt at this so the results are not perfect but im happy enough. The mould seems to be ok after pulling the first copy so Id say I can make a good few of them if anyone wants a pair.
They look fairly rough now but I will wash off the PVA release and sand them down. I used black gelcoat so even when the paint chips it will just reveal the black undercoat.
I used reinforcement in some areas like the arches so those parts are rock solid.
The leather sport seats are heavy and dont actually support very well so Iv bought some cheap seats from FK.de. €170 including postage from Germany. Got a 4 point harness so that will go in at some point.
I bought a little 32cm steering wheel to so together with the seats I now feel like im in a go-cart.
– Wheels / tyres
I found some OZ racing wheels locally for €120 but I didnt notice they were 4×108 . They are about 2kg lighter than my 7.5j lenso rims so they should help the suspension out. I can get 25mm spacer adapters for around €120 but now that the arch extensions are looking like a possibility Il probably just keep an eye out for some 0ET xxr’s or something similar.
Cheap trackday tyres can be found at eiretyres.com. They do federal RSR tyres for around €80 so thats the way to go for now.
The crappy Jom ‘coilovers’ really let the car down on the track. Lots of roll, arch rubbing, screaming front tyres in most corners. After doing a bit of research it seems its impossible to get decent coilovers for less than €850. So a set of new mk2 BC’s are on the list.
– Cooling / engine bay
My little m50 rad is no bigger than a 4 pot e30 rad. The electric fan im using isnt up to the task either so Iv bought a brand new e36 328i rad from ebay.de for around €80 posted and Il find a way of improving the fan to.
I found that even with the relatively low g-forces that my suspension / engine mounts would allow the engine to sit on my steering column in left corners. Thats only going to get worse when I upgrade the grip so Ill swap the m50 rubber mounts with e28 m5 mounts for now. Better mounts cost £200 so Id prefer to avoid that if I can.
Theres not much weight in the tec2 stuff but I suppose everything adds up. Iv started to make a front splitter that would go under the engine bay so Il probably loose the front apron. Its going to be a more simple version of this one…..
more like this one….
Im getting the materials from this ebay guy. His shipping is super fast, think its from Belfast….
So its on! Its not painted yet so its just sanded black gel coat. Theres lots of faults but Im happy with it as my first one. Its 1.9kg which is probably a bit over weight but that comes down to not really getting the fabric and resin on properly. The standard wing is very light anyway at around 4kg. The reason for Iv made these is to widen the track so Im not bothered about the poor weight loss.
The pics show a 9j et20 Rim with 225 tyres and a 32mm spacer. The wheels stick out about 15mm from the arch so Im hoping that a few degrees of camber with the BC coilovers should sort that out.
Just for the laugh I installed DTM mirrors. Cheap as chips so I thought Id give them a go. Aerodynamically they are 100 times better than the 2 bricks that stick out normally. Id agree with most of you, these mirrors look a bit ‘halfords tuned’. The in car noise should be quieter to. Il try a bit of black tape on the rain gutters and see if that makes less noise/ turbulence. Im sure there’s an app out there somewhere that could record decibel levels. Iv noticed that they act as vortex generators. In the rain I can see a swirling action on the window. Canards do this to smooth out the aerodynamics.
The finish might look closer to paint if I polish the gel coat so Im thinking of just adding a gloss clear coat.
Got some new wheels, this is my 6th set! I managed to find a reason to get a new set, finding the perfect offset. They’re Japan Racing JR10. Not to sure about the weight of these VS the lenso’s but I think Iv saved some weight. The new wide wing I have made extends about 30mm past the stock wing so I have 32mm spacers and ET10 so the front wheels sit just right now.
This is the same wheel/ spacer setup with the standard wing.
The rear is not fitting well now that the 9j’s are ET10 so il have to get some arch work done.
